Engineering Design Manager

We have a vacancy for an Engineering Design Manager to lead our engineering team based at our head office in Fareham. We are seeking a proven engineering man-manager with experience in leading a multi-disciplinary engineering team to be responsible for the design and development of our specialised computing equipment. You will have strong man-management capabilities and a sound understanding and experience of applying best practice engineering design methodologies and processes. Alongside this, you will have strong motivational skills and be an effective communicator as you will be engaging with internal and external stakeholders and customers.

As the Engineering Design Manager, you will be reporting to a technical Managing Director and be leading a multi-disciplinary team of up to ten engineers and technicians. You ideally will have at least five years’ experience in a management technical specialist role within an electro-mechanical engineering design discipline. Proven experience managing a whole spectrum of product development and realisation is key, which includes: project management, design, V&V, certification, handover into manufacturing and lifecycle management.

We are an award-winning designer and manufacturer with and ambitious growth plan to meet our milestone for an IPO stock market floatation in Q4 2020. As our company expands further, this role could lead to a more senior Technical Director role. The role will also have an allocation of pre and post IPO equity options available.

 

Key Responsibilities:
  • Management responsibility for the primary engineering departments functions of design and innovation (mechanical, electro-mechanical and electronic) functions.
  • Management, workflow planning, scheduling and review of work to deliver defined milestones to business stakeholders.
  • Participation in the setting of departmental budget and budget management managing with monthly/quarterly and annual reviews.
  • Management and technical involvement of multiple projects with regular review and management, involvement in design reviews and involvement in V&V.
  • Actively involved in new and existing product lifecycle management.
  • Oversee design reviews and ensure designs are optimised.
  • Fully responsible for the engineering processes within the company.

 

 

Required Experience & Skillset:
  • Currently be in a management leadership role with a minimum of five+ years track record.
  • Proven experience in managing multi-disciplinary technical teams with a blended mix of mechanical, electro/mechanical, computer configuration/integration and electronics.
  • Experienced budget setter/holder with responsibility for managing an assigned budget.
  • Sector experience working one or more of the following industries: defence, automation, medical equipment, transport, energy or communications.
  • Experience with understanding and managing product design and V&V to meet compliance and certification as required to international standards, eg. CE, FCC, 60601, 60945, DNV-2.4, MIL-STD-810, etc.
  • Customer/market-facing, consultative/solution-orientated technical experience in an industrial B2B market sector with a good degree of engineering, computing or technology-related subject expertise.

Mechanical Design Lead

As the Mechanical Design Lead, you will work within our engineering team ensuring products meet customer and market requirements across a wide range of technologies and industries, and also be involved in the design of mechanical and electro-mechanical products for use in industries from medical and oil and gas to military and industrial applications.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Mechanical Design Lead or an ambitious Design Engineer looking to develop their career and skillset while  expanding on their team leadership and management capabilities. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will have a real contribution to the design team in identifying, designing and developing products that meet specifications, look professionally engineered and that you can be justifiably proud of.  You will be responsible for organising the mechanical design team and taking the lead role in complex projects. This will include deciding on best processes, materials and structural integrity from the concept stage onwards and being able to take a high-level view of the overall design and how the various different components including mechanical and electrical/electronic interact to provide an end solution. The nature of projects will vary greatly and involve electro-mechanical design, system integration and innovation based around computing solutions.

You will be a qualified mechanical design engineer with experience in designing and developing small to medium sized products within the computer, telecoms or marine industries or similar. Experience working within an SME is essential as is your natural ability in using computer aided design packages.

Required Experience & Skillset:

Key Requirements:

  • At least ten years’ experience in mechanical designs made from predominately sheet metal fabrication within an electrical/electronic/electro-mechanical environment.
  • Knowledge or experience with injection moulding designs would be beneficial.
  • Experience as a design team leader/supervisor within a design environment.
  • Experience designing using 3D CAD software.
  • Experience of new product design, materials selection, modern manufacturing processes for small to medium size run rates.
  • Experience of producing meaningful and accurate manufacturing drawings and assemblies.
  • Understanding of revision and change control.

Electronics Engineer

We are on the lookout for an Electronics Engineer to join our dynamic, forward-thinking organisation that specialises in the design and manufacture of specialist computer equipment. You’ll be leading the design and development of bespoke analogue and digital electronic solutions from lithium battery management packs for commercial gaming tablets through to power distribution and monitoring equipment for use by the Royal Navy. As we grow into new industries and applications, the opportunity to learn and apply new skills is always just around the corner. Working from outline specifications, you’ll be responsible for the design, development and testing of new hardware and embedded solutions needed to meet customer and product requirements. You’ll be taking a leading role in multidisciplinary and cross-functional technical projects and providing guidance to other engineers during development project phases. Your work will encompass proving the viability of new concepts from first principles – including circuit modelling and calculations – and working with customers and other engineers to assist with integration, commissioning and problem resolution activities. In addition, as a senior interface with the production team, you will be responsible for ensuring that all data related to the electronic and electrical design and manufacture of a system is available for successful procurement and assembly.

Required Experience & Skillset:
  • Experienced as an Electronic Design Engineer.
  • Good experience designing and developing circuitry to manage lithium batteries.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience developing analogue electronics.
  • Expert in design capture and the creation and validation of electronic schematics
  • Very competent in designing and generating PCB layouts of reasonable complexity.
  • Good experience dealing with production facilities and resolving any issues that may invariably arise.
  • Experience in designing for manufacture and test (DFm/DFt) along with ability to prototype, conduct experiments and analyse and interpret data.

Desirable skills:

  • Experience designing power management electronics for lithium battery packs or similar in small equipment.
  • Experience designing embedded equipment.
  • Development of automatic test equipment for validation of electronic hardware.
  • Previous management or leadership experience in an engineering team.
